This week’s theme for Song Lyric Sunday is about Atoll, Island, Key, Lagoon, Peninsula, Reef, Tropical as suggested by Tales from the mind of Kristian.
This is the first song that popped into mind. I just love singing this song in karaoke π
La Isla Bonita is a song by American singer Madonna from her third studio album True Blue (1986). It was released as the album’s fifth and final single on February 25, 1987, by Sire Records. The song was written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard, with additional songwriting by Bruce Gaitsch. The initial composition of the song was first offered to Michael Jackson before Madonna both accepted it and wrote the lyrics and melody. “La Isla Bonita” is noted for being the first Madonna song to contain Latin influences, with arrangements of Cuban drums and Spanish Guitar, Maracas, Harmonicas, and a mix of synthesized and real drumming. The lyrics of the song tell about a “beautiful island” and, according to Madonna, was a tribute to the beauty of the Latinos.
Como puede ser verdad
Last night I dreamt of San Pedro
Just like I’d never gone, I knew the song
A young girl with eyes like the desert
It all seems like yesterday, not far away
Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby
I fell in love with San Pedro
Warm wind carried on the sea, he called to me
Te dijo te amo
I prayed that the days would last
They went so fast
Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby
I want to be where the sun warms the sky
When it’s time for siesta you can watch them go by
Beautiful faces, no cares in this world
Where a girl loves a boy, and a boy loves a girl
Last night I dreamt of San Pedro
It all seems like yesterday, not far away
Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby
Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby
La la la la la la la
Te dijo te amo
La la la la la la la
El dijo que te ama

This is one of my favorite Madonna songs. This link takes you to the Live Earth concert where she performs it with punk band Gogol Bordello. My favorite live music performance *ever*. The song doesn’t get going until 1:15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbDbBal53ig

I remember hearing this song as a child and liking the tune. I did not understand it, of course.
