I missed last week’s SLS, I hate it when I don’t get to complete the themes but I have been so busy with work stuff, plus we had a long weekend recently and took the chance of unplugging a bit…
This week’s SLS is kind of freaky…. it’s about songs where somebody is having sex or talking about it. I was thinking of a song that matches the theme and apparently, there’s just too many.
Freak Me is a song by American R&B group Silk. It was released in February 1993 as the second single from their debut album, Lose Control. It was co-written and co-produced by Keith Sweat, for whom Silk was a touring opening act. Tim Cameron, Jimmy Gates and Gary “Lol G” Jenkins sing lead on the song. The song was the group’s highest charting hit, reaching number-one on both the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, and the U.S. Hot R&B Singles chart for eight weeks. On the Hot 100, this song also spent ten weeks at number two. It was certified platinum by RIAA and sold over 1.3 million copies domestically.
I love music — Soul/R&B is my jam! I first heard of this when an ex gave me a mixtape of songs he liked back when we burn things on CD (timeline: definitely not 1993). I was shocked because I wasn’t prepared for the lyrics. I was a late bloomer and kind of prude so when I heard how graphic the lyrics were, I stopped the player feeling ashamed of what I was listening to because it was just sooo dirty.
But of course, I am old now, and I really enjoy the sound… both versions — Silk’s and Another Level’s
Freak Me
Freak me, baby (ah, yeah)
Freak me, baby (mm, just like that)
Freak me, baby (ah, yeah)
Freak me, baby
Let me lick you up and down till you say stop
Let me play with your body, baby, make you real hot
Let me do all the things you want me to do
‘Cause tonight, baby, I wanna get freaky with you
Baby, don’t you understand
I wanna be your nasty man
I wanna make your body scream
And you will know just what I mean (you know what I mean)
Twenty-four carat gold
To warm the nights when you get cold
I wanna lick you up and down (baby, yeah, baby, yeah)
And then I wanna lay you down, come on silk sing
Let me lick you up and down till you say stop (lick you up and down)
Let me play with your body, baby, make you real hot (let me make you real hot)
Let me do all the things you want me to do (whoa)
‘Cause tonight, baby, I wanna get freaky with you
I love the taste of whipped cream (hey)
Spread it on, don’t be mean (baby, don’t be mean)
You know I can’t resist you, girl
I’ll fly you all around the world (all around the world, oh, baby)
I wanna see your body drip
Come on let me take a sip (come on, come on, come on, come on)
Take off what you cherish most (come on, come on)
‘Cause when I brag, I like to brag and boast (come on, come on, baby)
Let me lick you up and down till you say stop (lick you up and down, oh, baby)
Let me play with your body, baby, make you real hot ((I wanna play with your body, baby)
(I wanna play with your body, girl)
Let me do all the things you want me to do (ah yeah)
‘Cause tonight, baby, I wanna get freaky with you
You, you, you, you (oh, you)
You, you, you, you (let me freak you)
You, you, you, you (all of you)
Yeah, come on, come on
You, you, you, you (oh you)
You, you, you, you (let me do you)
‘Cause tonight, baby, I wanna get freaky with you
Let me lick you up and down till you say stop (freak me, baby)
Let me play with your body, baby, make you real hot (freak me, baby)
Let me do all the things you want me to do (freak me, baby)
‘Cause tonight, baby, I wanna get freaky with you
Let me play (baby, don’t stop) with your body, baby, make you real hot (hey)
Let me do (baby, don’t stop) all the things you want me to do (baby, don’t stop)
‘Cause tonight, baby, I wanna get freaky, freaky
Let me play with your body, baby (up and down), make you real hot
(Let me make you soakin’ wet, baby)
Let me do all the things (oh) you want me to do
(I won’t play around with your love, baby)
(‘Cause tonight, baby, I wanna get freaky with you)
I seem to remember a lot of music around that time sounded like that. It made me stop listening to the charts as a result. I found new music from compliation CDs and radio.

Yeah, there was a phase when it’s all about R&B… it has ended (too bad for us R&B fans) and now, it’s all mixed with the mumble raps…
I like compilations CDs too because you get to listen to the best songs

I remember it was the same with reggae. You got a bunch of songs where it’s basically a guy singing “I got a big dick and I fathered so many children” and it was just a major turn-off. Is that all people have got, to talk about?
Even in my 20s it turned me off and I’m a lot more militant now!

Hahaha. I get what you mean… it’s worse today. There are very few songs with sense, most of them are indie music. I get to listen to these from an app called SMULE — songs sang by amateur singers but are totally worth listening to.

I get to listen to new stuff because my blog partner (on Songshine) goes through them each week and selects some good ones. One or two, they are producing music right now and have become firm favourites. Independent, as you say.
But most is complete shite! I’m surprised even KK can stomach it because she is about your age I think and normally our tastes have narrowed by then.

Oh, so that’s what the blog is for!!! I thought it’s just a random selection of whatever’s new… (and you liked).. so you mean, she goes through a bunch of music to see which ones got potential… that’s tough because some songs are too painful to hear…
Do you have a playlist on Spotify that we can listen to? It’s good to expose ourselves to indie music better than the mumble raps and nonsense lyrics these days…

KK and I met because of writing, we borth also liked music and had the bright idea of starting the blog. So it’s pretty much 50:50. We do themed posts on certain days, fior example I do an oldie track on Thursdays, she does a brand new track on Mondays etc.
But… creating the posts for the site is easy, but building a following has been really difficult. You know how it is.
I use Spotify to help me select songs for my themes, I’m pretty sure KK does too. I think over the weekend she gets a feed of “new music” from somewhere, enables her to pick a new track to present on Mondays.

I agree, it’s hard to build a following. You have to post challenges and prompts and answer them religiously as well 😀 I totally admire those who can commit…
KK’s name is so cute… there’s this celebrity character in Animal Crossing, his name is KK Slider. So cute, all he does is sing and play guitars… very musical!

We tend to use each other’s real names but on the blog, she goes by KK, so I respect that.

I guess it takes a nasty man to really get freaky and make your body scream, but it does sound like it would be enjoyable Janis.

I am pretty sure it would 😀

I LOVE THIS SONG! It is a guilty pleasure of mine because Silk got some fine vocals. I feel like the 90s were all about sex!

It was! Salt ‘n’ Pepa, TLC, Color Me Badd were some with song about sexy in the 90s.

Haha. Exactly!!! And we’re like kids back then without really understanding what these things were… I remember that TV show, “My So-Called Life” I was too young to understand them… our culture (Filipino) is way different from the US kids…
