This week’s theme for Song Lyric Sunday is brought to you by Lady A — Theme: Devoted, Faithful, Honorable, Loyal, True
I chose Spandau Ballet’s song, “True” since I love this song and it never gets old — so chill, and so perfect 🙂
The song tells a story of a man who is indeed in love with a lady but is having a very difficult time expressing such. At the end of the day, he is reduced to focusing on “the truth” of his feelings as opposed to elaborate words to express them.
It was told that the greatest inspiration for this song was a friendship Gary Kemp (songwriter and band member) had with a lady by the name of Clare Grogan, a media personality. Indeed there is a good portion of the lyrics which can be seen as alluding to this platonic relationship. For example, the phrase “head over heels when toe-to-toe” can be gleaned as a metaphor for Gary’s infatuation with Clare. These certain phrases in this song were lifted from the classic 1955 novel, “Lolita” which was gifted to him by Clare as a birthday gift.
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
So true, funny how it seems
Always in time, but never in line for dreams
Head over heels when toe to toe
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound
I bought a ticket to the world
But now I’ve come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh I want the truth to be said
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
I know this much is true
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
I know this much is true
With a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue
Dissolve the nerves that have just begun
Listening to Marvin (all night long)
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound
Always slipping from my hands
Sand’s a time of its own
Take your seaside arms and write the next line
Oh I want the truth to be known
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
I know this much is true
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
I know this much is true
I bought a ticket to the world
But now I’ve come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh I want the truth to be said
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
I know this much is true
Huh huh huh hu-uh huh
I know this much is true
This much is true
This much is true
This much is true
I know, I know, I know this much is true
This much is true
This much is true (huh huh)
This much is true
This much is true
I know this much is true
This much is true (huh huh)
This much is true (I know this much is true)
This much is true (huh huh)
This much is true (I know this much is true)
I know, I know, I know this much is true

Clare Grogan was, at the time, the lead singer of a band called Altered Images. She was gorgeous, all of us schoolboys had the hots for her. I’ve heard of her on tv these days.

LOVE this song. As soon as I read your opening paragraph, I got the album out of my collection and gave it a spin on my turntable. It had been years since I’d listened to it. Sounds as good as ever. Thanks for the memories.

I remember when I first listen to it when I was young. It was my first Spandau Ballet song and I used to it a lot until someone introduced me to “Gold”. “True” is still a great song.
