I had fun doing this week’s Song Lyric Sunday entry. The songs that I have chosen are: There’s No Easy Way by James Ingram and I Never Loved You Anyway by The Corrs.
“There’s No Easy Way”
I held her close to me
‘Cause I know she breaks so easily
And then I told her
But I knew no matter how I tried to console her
She’d just do the best she could
But there are times the best in no damn good
And no matter how you try to be kind
There’s always still a part of you you leave behind
When it falls apart
[Chorus:]
There’s no easy way to break somebody’s heart
I lied and told her she’d be fine
Though we both knew it was just a line
I had to do it
‘Cause I’d a’ said anything to help me get through it
Then she reached out for my hand
And her simple touch was more than I could stand
And I had to turn away
‘Cause I knew all the hurt
That she was feeling I was feeling too
‘Cause when it falls apart
[Chorus:]
There’s no easy way to break somebody’s heart
She could’ve gotten angry
And made me feel like a guilty child
But I realized that never was her style
I wanted her to hurt me
And not treat me like a friend
I wanted her to say there’d be someday
I’m come crawling on my knees to ask her back again
But she acted like a lady ’til the end
Oh, what a lady
I thought that she’d break down
But she smiled at me and never made a sound
And I guess she understood in her way
Cause her silence told me everything she could not say
When it falls apart
There’s just no easy way
[Chorus:]
There’s just no easy way
There’s just no easy way to break somebody’s heart.
“I Never Loved You Anyway”
You bored me with your stories
I can’t belive that I endured you for as long as I did
I’m happy, it’s over, I’m only sorry
That I didn’t make the move before you
And when you go I will remember
To send a thankyou note to that girl, (oh that girl)
I see she’s holding you so tender
Well I just wanna say…
(Just wanna say…)
I never really loved you anyway
No I didn’t love you anyway
I never really loved you anyway
I’m so glad you’re moving away
Valentino, I don’t think so
You watching MTV while I lie dreaming in an empty bed
And come to think of it
I was misled
My flat, my food, my everything
And thoughts inside my head
Before you go I must remember
To have a quiet word with that girl
(Oh that girl)
Does she know you’re not a spender
Well I just have to say…
(Just wanna say…)
I never really loved you anyway
No I didn’t love you anyway
I never really loved you anyway
I’m so happy you’re moving away
Yeah, I am
Yeah, I am
(And when you go I will remember)
I must remember to say…
I never really loved you anyway
No I didn’t love you anyway
I never really loved you anyway
I never really loved you anyway
Never really loved you anyway
(I never really loved you anyway)
No I didn’t love you anyway
(Never loved you anyway)
Never truly loved you anyway
(I Never loved you anyway)
I’m so happy you’re moving away
Yeah I’m delighted you’re moving away
Both are break up songs. There’s No Easy Way to Break Somebody’s Heart by James Ingram is a dream come true for any boy who is ever going to break up with a girl because who wants a messy break up right? Who wants the yelling, wailing, and throwing things? No one. But most times, those reactions were inevitable if the partner did not see it coming especially when you are being left for another girl.
I am only talking gender about this because this is in reference to a song sang by a man about how graceful his lady took the break up. But of course, this applies to either sex.
When I first listened to this song, I was deeply hurting for the girl. I am most hurt because I at one point had been on this situation when I dated a guy who had been separated from his wife for 2 years and has a kid. After dating for a year, he told me that he and his ex decided to try fixing their marriage because it could be worth saving for their kid. Who was I to negate such goal? I remember being extremely quiet because I knew that it’s the end and that not fighting it is the better thing to do, but I was truly dying inside.
On the other hand, I Never Loved You Anyway by The Corrs is another breakup song from a girl’s perspective. This song tells about how the girl sourgrapes on the breakup. She is bitter after being dumped wishing she’d dumped him instead.
I feel that most of us have had this type of breakup. We hated ourselves from being too slow to break it up wishing we’d dumped them first because — “we never loved them anyway”.
I love the Corrs, Janis! So many great songs have been written about all kinds of breakups. Thank you for sharing such a personal insight.

I was thinking of posting Just Like a Pill by Pink to reflect the toxic view of breakup… but I preferred the Corrs because it’s such a lovely ensemble! Are they still active?

Pink is fabulous too and very popular in our household. She can really tell it how it is. The Corrs had a ten year break from 2006 and went off to be with their families and raise their kids – how awesome is that! So, they are back together and have been busily putting out music since about 2017

That’s nice! I wonder if their kids would be musicians like them 🙂
And yes to P!NK ❤

I should probably have break up songs as a prompt one week, because I am sure there are a lot to choose from. Great choice of songs Janis and thanks foe making such a relevant connection between them. Being dumped is never fun, but some people stay in relationships after the love is gone and it would probably be better for both if they had just broken up.

You are right, breaking up is no fun but better be truthful to avoid further pain 🙂 And yes, breakup songs would be a good prompt ❤ Thanks a lot!

Breakup songs are so gut wrenching. I enjoyed this post. Thank you for reminding me how much I like James Ingram’s voice.
