I think I am a week behind for Dr. Tanya’s 5 Things Tuesday Prompt. This was for last week but I find it quite interesting so I decided to participate (although very late). She asked about our five favorite canned goods whether they’re ready to eat or ingredients for our recipes; seems easy but it’s actually hard to select just 5.
My top 5 are the following:
- SPAM – Not the fancy flavors though. I love the plain less sodium ones or the Turkey one.
- Hereford Corned Beef or the older version of OX & Palm Corned Beef – I am very particular in stating the term “older version” because the ones we’ve got today do not taste the same.
- Century Tuna with Calamansi – I am not an Amazon affiliate but the link directs you to the product in case you want to know what it is. It’s a simple tuna in vegetable oil with Calamansi (a tiny citrus fruit popular in the Philippines). This one is amazing!
- Libby’s Vienna Sausage – We had a phase when this is all we eat. I don’t know why!
- Condensed Milk – This is something I always have in my pantry whenever I am on Keto break as this is one of my favorite desserts ever. I binge on condensed milk just because! Plus, it’s what I use to make my favorite candy called Yema.
Condensed Milk – awesome. It was an institution in itself here. We used it for so many different recipes. From memory, I used to make a mushroom shaped biscuit that had the filling based on condensed milk. It was very rich, but very popular and once it was in a tube – an extremely tradable item. We were talking to the kids about Spam the other night. Our favourite tinned foods were: Braised Steak and Onions – awesome in a toasted sandwich, Sausage and Vegetables – a good fallback when having a cupboard dinner, many canned soups – perfect as a back up during winter or as the basis for a dish. Of course there were steam puddings – butterscotch was my favourite.

Oh Sean! It’s Ramadan right now and we cannot eat / drink in public til the breaking of fast (IFTAR), I am famished! The thought of braised steak had me spiraling hahaha!! I can’t wait to go home! 😀 😀 😀
I am happy to hear about your condensed milk experience! I can imagine how those biscuits taste like! It amazes me knowing that some people love it too… I thought I was weird because my family never liked it the way I do..
My husband makes fun of my obsession with condensed milk. He told me years ago, “you’re the only girl I’ve met who is not ashamed to gulp a canful of condensed milk while hanging with a boy”

Lol, Janis – that husband of yours 😂 I wouldn’t survive Ramadan. I was never particularly good with Lent!

I remember when we first got married and my husband asked me to buy condensed milk, that thick, sticky, sweet, rich stuff that, in our house we might have now and again, on a Sunday, with fruit for pudding. He used to like it on bread – at any time. Yuk, I’ve always hated it.

I like number 3,4 & 5. I also eat those when in the PH. I do miss it but Century Tuna though you can buy in the Pinoy shops here in NZ the cost is 2-3x of the price in pesos!

Same in Saudi Arabia. Imported goods can be very expensive as well… imagine SPAM being a contraband here, it sells up to 3000 php per can sometimes.
How do you use your condensed milk? As an ingredient or do you consume it as is?

Actually I recently made a oatsballs with it just condense milk, milo and oats. Roll it like a ball then put it in the fridge! Try it. We were expats in Abu Dhabi. Now in New Zealand.
