Cookie Decorating with Brook

I never knew how ineffective I am at the kitchen until recently. I am not the ‘cooking mom’ — I am more of the ‘let’s play a game mom’ or the ‘kisses and hugs party’ kind of mom… but never ever the queen of the kitchen. I do cook but not like most moms who are certified Olympians. I am the amateur kind. My husband does it better. I cook on necessity every morning and husband does the dinner… I cook for fun with my sisters because they are soooo good in making things — incredible and delectable things!!! I just stay there to mess it up for them or add some fun.

We ordered a cookie decorating kit from one of the local restaurants in Riyadh for Brook’s homeschooling. The restaurant is called “Kitchen” and it is quite affordable. It costs less than 50 SAR for a bunch of cookies, cupcakes, some tubes of coloring and lots of candy sprinkles. We decided to do this for his arts and crafts that week because things are already getting a bit boring and boy did he enjoy!!!

I was just a bit frustrated because I thought it’s going to be a breeze. I didn’t expect to produce such a masterpiece but I thought it will at least be decent enough to look edible.

I was inspired by my friend, Denise who apparently is a cookie design genius! Denise used to be one of the most active lifestyle bloggers back then (circa 2007). She still microblogs via Instagram (Ig: cookie_project_qatar) and oh em gee, her work is amazing.

Here is one of her videos:

While this is ours:

I totally underestimated this process. I thought it was easy. Our finished product says it all, “Nothing in Life Ever Comes EASY

Nevertheless, we are happy because Brook had fun while doing some art activities with mommy! The joy seeing him commit to the project is super worth the frustration.

PS: They are edible.

    1. I bet they enjoyed it so much!

You are right! It’s been real fun! I always do crafting with him, however, the closest thing to cooking we’ve done together is making DIY Playdoh… this may not be an actual baking but the fun and experience we’ve had is priceless!!

  1. There was always a style of working….if you do something badly enough, then you will never be asked to do it again, and will therefore be able to live a quiet, gentle, existence with nobody bugging you to do things.

Are you sure you’re not just going for that effect in the kitchen?
Brook will, presumably, be cooking for himself before too long!

    1. Hahaha… no.. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
My husband used to think that about me because for him, no one can be as horrible as how my sisters would describe my cooking… Until he’s tasted it.

I did try to learn before getting married. But he is too good a cook to make him suffer and eat my dish… he’d rather cook the actual meals.

I cook breakfast.. eggs, bacon, chicken nuggets, pancakes… πŸ˜€ I perfected the art of cooking rice without the measuring cup.

I just couldn’t understand how can one botch a recipe without deviating from the process and without using any substitution…

Brook I think will be a good cook. He dreams of becoming a chef or a fisherman. It’s good either way πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
